Electronic invoicing is a form of electronic billing. E-invoicing methods are used by trading partners, such as customers and their suppliers, to present and monitor transactional documents between one another and ensure the terms of their trading agreements are being met. These documents include invoices, purchase orders, debit notes, credit notes, payment terms and instructions, and remittance slips. A true E-Invoice can be defined as the following: Structured invoice data issued in Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) or XML formats and structured invoice data issued using standard Internet-based web forms. These documents can be exchanged in a number of ways including EDI, XML, or CSV files. They can be uploaded using emails, virtual printers, web applications or FTP sites. The company may use imaging software to capture data from PDF or paper invoices and input it into their invoicing system. This streamlines the filing process while positively impacting sustainability efforts. Some companies have their own in-house e-invoicing process, however many companies hire a third party company to implement and support e-invoicing processes and to archive the data on their own servers.

Accounting software describes a type of application software that records and processes accounting transactions within functional modules such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and trial balance. It functions as an accounting information system. It may be developed in-house by the organization using it, may be purchased from a third party, or may be a combination of a third-party application software package with local modifications. Accounting software may be on-line based, accessed anywhere at anytime with any device which is Internet enabled, or may be desktop based. It varies greatly in its complexity and cost.

InvoicePlane is a free and open source invoicing application. The project is the official successor and owner of the codebase of FusionInvoice version 1.x, which was written by Jesse Terry. FusionInvoice was an open source software before but was transformed into a commercial product with the release of version 2.x. Kovah, the InvoicePlane project leader, took over the codebase and restarted the project with a new name: InvoicePlane. The main idea behind the InvoicePlane software is the creation of an application you host on a web server and use it for basic invoicing and client management. The target groups are freelancers, self-employed workers and small to medium sized companies which need a reliable and easy to use invoicing system but who can't afford an expensive software.
